What are the symptoms and causes of epilepsy and convulsive seizures in dogs and cats?

Most seizure episodes last for a very short time, usually less than a minute.  They can be characterized by the animal stiffening, becoming immobile, but with a rapid mouth and tongue movement.  Often a saliva foam forms around the pet’s mouth. Distemper: Puppies that have had distemper may also have seizures.

Lead, Chemical Additives, and Poisons: High amounts of lead in food or in the environment can contribute to an epileptic condition.  This also pertains to chemical additives contained in food, or household poisons that your pet may have obtained

How seizures are generally treated?

A particularly stressful time for any owner is when their beloved pet has some sort of illness or distress.  Seizure episodes are frequently treated with a type of nervous system depressant drug, such as Phenobarbital.  These drugs have absolutely no curative powers. It only aids in decreasing the frequency of the episodes. In addition, the longer a nervous system depressant is administered to a pet, the chances are greater that the drug will eventually cease to be effective. You are encouraged to ask your veterinarian for complete information about any drug that may be prescribed for your pet.
